What the Heck is This?

I have no idea, but it was growing on a tree on Monterey.

(Yes, I used the digital, I was at a lawyer conference and was not carrying my usual stuff.)

I am going to guess that this is a Callistemon citrinus or Scarlet Bottlebrush (0r a closely related species) which is native to Australia but widely cultivated in your area. I will post a photo on my blog of a similar looking shrub that I took in January in Foster City. Here is a link to a photo that looks a lot like yours. I'm pretty sure it is a Bottlebrush species - a plant I see often in Oz! cheers :)
