The Empire Mine - Grass Valley, California

A fascinating place to visit. This is one HUGE gold mine, 300 miles a shafts descending down 4,000 feet. the mine operated for over 100 years and only closed in 1956 because the price of gold was fixed at $35/ounce and it was costing $45/ ounce to get it out of the ground. Imgine, $45/ounce! 80% of the gold is still down there in the now flooded mine.

The owner lived pretty nicely!

Great images! Imagine that much gold still down there I guess it still isn't cost effective to get it out. Shame.

With the price of gold being where it is these days, I am surprised they haved opened the mine again.
